Windows Defender is an antivirus application that comes preinstalled on Microsoft Windows, and you do not have to uninstall it. The steps below detail how to check if any third party antivirus application has been installed on a computer.
How to check for installed third party antivirus applications
1. Click on the Windows Start icon or press the Windows key on your keyboard.
2. Start typing the word "virus" and you should see Virus & threat protection at the top of the results. Click on Virus & threat protection .
3. If there is third party antivirus installed, you will see it here.
4. If you do not have third party antivirus installed, the window will look like this.
How to uninstall a third party antivirus application
If there is a third party antivirus applications installed on a computer it must be uninstalled. The steps below detail how to uninstall a third party antivirus application.
1. Click on the Windows Start icon or press the Windows key on your keyboard.
2. Start typing the word "control" and you should see Control Panel at the top of the results. Click on Control Panel
3. Click on Programs.
3. Then click on Programs and Features.
4. Scroll down to find the program you want to remove and select it, then click on Uninstall or Uninstall/Change. Follow the directions on the screen to complete the removal.
IMPORTANT After uninstalling an antivirus program, it is essential to shutdown the computer and restart it.
